UFC 220’s Rob Font talks Thomas Almeida, Training at Lauzon MMA & Golf Game

Rob Font looks forward to one of the biggest fights of his life at UFC 220 against Thomas Almeida.

The bantamweight contender is ranked #14 in the division right now and the fighter knew his path would cross with Almeida one day.

“Its funny, I kind of knew this fight was going to happen, I don’t know why. I just knew this fight would happen one day after the (Pedro) Munhoz fight. On the flight back, (I’m like) what’s the next fight, we’re both ranked, so I knew it was going to happen and may like two, three days later I figured it would be (Renan) Barao or Almeida. Two to three days later, the UFC called me and asked if I wanted to fight Almeida and it would be in Boston (site of UFC 220) and I didn’t have to think about it, said yes," Font told Fightful.

Font has won two of his last three heading into the fight, while Almeida has won just one of his last three bouts.

One advantage that Font believes he holds of his upcoming opponent is that he trains alongside UFC veteran Joe Lauzon.

“I’m actually at Lauzon’s right now, I am putting in the work. …you know Joe has opened up his doors and he has taken me in, giving me a lot of knowledge. He’s hooking me up with pad work alongside his boxing coach, so I am just having a blast. We bring in a lot of different guys (to train with) from different gyms, also all the guys from Rhode Island and all the guys who are already here. We have a huge squad meeting up with us on Wednesdays and Saturdays," said Font.

UFC 220 takes place on Saturday, January 20 from the TD Garden in Boston Massachusetts with Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.

The full interview, Rob Font (14-3) discusses his upcoming fight against Thomas Almeida (22-2) at UFC 220 on Jan. 20. Rob also talks about his loss to Pedro Munhoz, his training camp and his golf game.
