Tyron Woodley Calls Interim Titles “A Joke”

UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley is defending the gold against Kamaru Usman this Saturday Night in the co-main event of UFC 235.

The UFC will hold UFC 236 this April and their are two vacant interim titles that will get new owners at the event, but Woodley believes interim titles are a joke.

“This is the funny thing to me,” Woodley said at a UFC 235 media lunch (via MMA Junkie). “The interim belt is the biggest joke on earth.”

Israel Adesanya and Kelvin Gastelum will battle for the vacant interim middleweight gold at the event, while UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier will compete for the vacant interim lightweight title on the same card.

That UFC 236 card may be a joke in the eyes of Woodley, but he doesn’t want to take things too far and end up in the UFC doghouse again.

“Ooh, a stacked card! A double interim belt,” Woodley joked. “I’m not trying to hate, because I’m not trying to get my ass back in the dog house. … But when you think about it, you’ve got a current champion, which out of all champions, Max Holloway may be our favorite champion. If you ask all the champions who their favorite champion is, we might all say Max Holloway. He don’t have to go up to fight for an interim belt. Unless he’s fighting for an actual lightweight belt, it doesn’t make sense.”

UFC 235 takes place on Saturday, March 2 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada with Jon Jones and Anthony Smith headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
