With thousands of fights having taken place since, no one can deny that these are great entertainment. From the thousands that have taken place, here’s our take on the top 5 fights of all time.
5) Dan Henderson vs. Mauricio Rua – UFC 139
You know it’s been a great performance when both fighters end up missing the after fight press conference because they were in hospital. With Rua already bloodied in the first round, Henderson was pounding him going for the 3rd round knockout. Expending every ounce of energy that he had, Henderson hadn’t bargained on Rua withstanding the constant blows. With Henderson’s energy depleted, Rua took advantage and pounded Henderson over and over. Somehow, Henderson remained standing in the 5th and final round and went on to take the win.
4) Frankie Edgar vs. Gray Maynard III – UFC 136
Everyone loves an underdog, right? Well, maybe Edgar didn’t go into the fight as one, but by the end of the first round, even the commentators were astounded that he was even standing, let alone still fighting. Keeping his distance in round 2 while he recovered from what can only be described as a beating, a bloodied Edgar powered on, ultimately knocking Maynard out with an uppercut and numerous rights in the 4th round.
3) Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen – UFC 117
Much the same way as everyone loves an underdog, everyone loves a comeback, and this one was taken straight from a Rocky movie. With Silva defending his title, it was Sonnen who took the upper hand, pounding Silva through the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th rounds. Round 5 remained the same until out of nowhere, in the final two minutes, Silva forced Sonnen to submit with a triangle choke, and miraculously retained his title.
2) Robbie Lawler vs. Rory Macdonald – UFC 189
When a fight goes down to the wire, the suspense and entertainment are immense, and that is what happened in this great fight. Evenly matched throughout the first 4 rounds, Lawler and Macdonald entered the 5th looking like they had both just walked away from a car crash. It was in the first minute of this round that Lawler had had enough. He crushed Macdonald’s nose, sending him to the mat in agony. After a truly bloody battle, Lawler emerged victorious.
1) Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar – TUF 1 Finale
This fight was not even the headline event of the night, but when the crowd gives a standing ovation after just the first round, you know that it has to be something special. Ultimately this fight was two lightweights battering seven bells out of each other for a whole 15 minutes. With no knockout in sight, two bloodied fighters claimed victory after the 5th round. When the win was awarded to Griffin, an exhausted Bonnar fell to the mat and according to this latest UFC review by Betway Sports, it seems McGregor might be trying his very best to disturb the UFC when he takes on Poirier on the 23rd January.
