Thiago Santos Thought He Outpointed Jon Jones At UFC 239, Dana White Disagrees
Even though the fighter came up short at UFC 239, a defeated Santos thought that he had outpointed Jones to win the light heavyweight title.
“I thought I picked more, outpointed him,” Santos said after the event (via Mike Bohn of MMA Junkie). “With my knee like that it was about as much as I could do. It was a very tough fight, though. … I’m pretty happy with myself. Given everything that happened I’m happy with myself and the fight I put on.I have the same opinion that I had going into the fight: That he’s a man like any other man and he bleeds, he feels the strikes. I had good moments in the fight, too, so no, he’s not unbeatable. He’s a man like any other one.”
The scorecards disagreed with Santos though, with two judges giving the bout 29-28 scores for Jones and one judge scoring it 29-28 for Santos.
UFC President Dana White was Octagon side for the fight and he doesn’t quite understand why anyone would score the bout in favor of Santos.
“Anybody who scores that fight for Santos is out of their mind,” he said to Brett Okamoto of ESPN (via Milan Ordonez of Bloody Elbow). “You should never judge another fight if you judged Santos (as the winner). Santos fought tough, he’s a tough guy. Something happened to his leg or his knee in the second round and he fought through it and he was tough. But he lost that fight.”
There is no word yet on whats next for Santos, but Jones is potentially fighting the winner of the UFC 241 main event next.
