Stephen Thompson: “It Doesn’t Make Sense” To Fight Khamzat Chimaev

Khamzat Chimaev is awaiting to find his next opponent, but that next opponent is not going to be Stephen Thompson.

Thompson, when asked about possibly fighting Chimaev, says it does not make sense for him to face an unranked fighter.

“No, I’m not fighting him, man. I mean, it just doesn’t make sense for me at this point,” Thompson said on his Youtube channel (via Abhinav Kini of The Body Lock MMA). “I’m ranked No. 5 to fight a guy who is unranked? You know what I mean. I fought a lot of guys to get to where I’m at. And a lot of other fighters fought a lot of guys to get where they’re at so I don’t see why it’s okay for him to jump past everybody.”

Chimaev has made a lot of waves in the UFC after just picking up three wins with the last of those being against Gerald Meerschaert at UFC Vegas 11. Thompson, who hasn’t competed since UFC 244 in November of 2019, doesn’t have a fight lined up at the moment.
