Roy Jones Jr. is supposedly set to retire from professional boxing this coming February, with his opponent being Scott Sigmon.
If there was a bout that could get Jones Jr. out retirement, it would be against former UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. Jones Jr. wants the bout, but he would also like the UFC to cut Silva so it can come to fruition.
“I know he [Silva] wants to do it and I know it’s something I want to do, so for him I would come out and fight, yes,” Jones told TMZ Sports. ”Yes we have [talked about making the fight happen], and I had a group of guys from Chicago who told me they want to invest and make it happen as well, so all we need Dana to do is let him go, let him free of his contract and we can make it happen.”
Outside of the UFC, another thing that can halt the bout from happening is that Silva could be facing a suspension after a potential USADA violation before UFC Fight Night Shanghai.
Jones Jr. is also pleading with UFC President Dana White to let Silva out of his deal so the fight can happen.
“I would say ‘Dana, it’s your boy. When you were a nobody, I treated you like you were somebody, so a favour for a favour you know what I’m saying? Let your boy do what he gotta do to get outta here. It’s a perfect situation, a perfect fight, a perfect opportunity—something all the fans want to see,’” says Jones Jr.
The largest MMA fighter versus pro boxer bout to take place thus far was when UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor fought Floyd Mayweather this past August.
