Report: UFC Returning On May 9, Three Title Fights & Other Bouts Set
It looks like it won’t take long for the UFC to return to action because the promotion is set to hold their next card on May 9.
MMA Fighting first reported the news, but a location for the potential card hasn’t been revealed at this time. However, three states in Florida, California and Texas were named by the report as potential landing spots for the show. May 9 was originally set to be the date for UFC 250, which was posted due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Brett Okamoto of ESPN also reported a few potential fights for the card, which include former UFC Interim Lightweight Champion Tony Ferguson vs. Justin Gaethje for the vacant UFC Interim Lightweight Title, Amanda Nunes defending the women’s featherweight title against Felicia Spencer, Henry Cejudo defending the bantamweight title against Dominick Cruz, Francis Ngannou vs. Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Donald Cerrone vs. Anthony Pettis.
Other bouts announced for the card according to Okamoto include Jeremy Stephens vs. Calvin Kattar, Greg Hardy vs. Yorgan De Castro, Alexei Oleinik vs. Fabricio Werdum, Carla Esparza vs. Michelle Waterson, Ronaldo Souza vs. Uriah Hall, Vicente Luque vs. Niko Price and Charles Rosa vs. Bryce Mitchell.
The UFC won’t be hosting the event on the much lauded “Fight Island,” which UFC President Dana White said would be ready to hold events in about one month’s time. The UFC was also supposed to return to action this weekend with UFC 249, but that event was canceled and others were postponed after both ESPN and Disney asked White to stand down in light of the coronavirus.
If the reported card does go through as planned, it would mark the promotion’s first event since UFC Fight Night Brasilia on March 14.
