Report: UFC Conducting Coronavirus Tests For Future Cards, Starting With UFC 249

The UFC is set to return to action this weekend with UFC 249, which is headlined by Tony Ferguson and Justin Gaethje battling for the vacant UFC Interim Lightweight Title.

This return to action for the UFC coincides with the coronavirus pandemic, which has been wreaking havoc all over the globe. The UFC has already taken a lot of precaution with those who are working the event, including various tests for all fighters and their corners, plus holding the shows in an empty arena setting.

A report from ESPN is now stating that the promotion is expected to perform coronavirus testing on the fighters competing at UFC 249 and their corner people as well. The tests will supposedly include both diagnostic swab tests and antibodies tests, plus the results for all the tests should be known before the UFC 249 card takes place.

There is no word yet on what the plan will be if a fighter or their corner person tests positive for the virus, as that protocol hasn’t been made public at this time.

These tests will not just be conducted this weekend at UFC 249, but at all future UFC events for the foreseeable future.

MMA Junkie, after this story was posted, obtained an email from the UFC detailing their coronavirus testing plans:

“Upon completion of the UFC Medical Team administered COVID-19 test. The UFCPI Performance Dietitian will conduct a fight week screen that includes but isn’t limited to: weight, nutritional status, food allergies or intolerances and weight cut tactics.”
