Report: Rafael dos Anjos vs. Leon Edwards Set for UFC San Antonio Main Event
UFC San Antonio has its main event, with Rafael dos Anjos taking on Leon Edwards in a pivotal Welterweight contender clash.
Just hours after suggesting that Rafael dos Anjos had rejected a fight offer, Leon Edwards will get his wish after all.
UFC Fight Night San Antonio finally has it’s main event, with Rafael dos Anjos taking on Leon Edwards over five rounds on July 20th. The news was reported by Yahoo Sports, with Dana White confirming the news to them. The report states that initially, there was hope that UFC 239’s Luke Rockhold vs. Jan Blachowicz bout would move over. However, Rockhold had previously committed to a Ralph Lauren Polo commercial which fell on the same date.
As a result, the event now receives a Welterweight contender clash instead, with Edwards looking to make it eight straight wins opposite the highest profile opponent of his career. Most recently, Edwards (17-3) outpointed Gunnar Nelson but now takes on a former champion in a pivotal main event bout. Edwards has headlined before, defeating Donald Cerrone via Unanimous Decision in June 2018.
Dos Anjos (29-11) enters after an impressive win of his own though, submitting Kevin Lee last month at UFC Fight Night Rochester. That result snapped a two fight skid for the former Lightweight Champion and he’ll now look to build a new streak of the winning variety, aiming to retain his #3 ranking against Edwards who’s currently 11th.
