After months of teasing a return to boxing, it appears that Mike Tyson has finally made his decision and the legendary heavyweight will face another boxing legend in Roy Jones Jr. in an eight round exhibition bout.
Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports first reported the news, while Iole has also reported that the undercard of the event will feature an MMA fighter versus boxers theme, although who’ll represent each side for those bouts is unknown at the moment.
The report also states that event will take place in the state of California, but an exact location hasn’t been revealed at this time. No broadcast plans have been revealed at this time either.
Tyson hasn’t competed in a boxing match of any kind in over fourteen years, but holds a professional boxing record of 50-6-0-2NC. Jones Jr. would be returning to action after a two-plus year layoff and he has won four straight heading into the potential bout against Tyson, with Jones Jr. holding a record of 66-9-0.
It should be noted that nobody from either Tyson’s camp or Jones Jr.’s camp have commented on the potential exhibition bout.
Ariel Helwani of ESPN has provided additional information on the fight, stating the Tyson vs. Jones Jr. will happen on September 12 and there will be no fans in attendance. Helwani, who spoke with Andy Foster of the CSAC, says that there is going to be no headgear worn by the fighters and “larger gloves” may be used.
