Report: Flyweight Title Fight Rebooked For UFC 216
The UFC Flyweight Title is going to be defended next month at UFC 216 as champion Demetrious Johnson defends against #3 Ray Borg.
This news was first reported by Raphael Marinho of Combate.
UFC 215 was the original event for the title bout, but then Borg pulled out of the fight after falling ill a few days before.
Johnson (26-2-1) looks to break Anderson Silva's record for consecutive successful title defenses, where they are currently tied at 10. Widely considered one of the greatest fighters of all time, "Mighty Mouse" passed up a big fight with former Bantamweight Champion TJ Dillashaw to take this bout. Johnson last defended the title against Wilson Reis at UFC On Fox 24, that win tied the UFC record for most consecutive title defenses.
Borg (11-2) has won five of his last six fights, including victories over Louis Smolka and Jussier Formiga since December. Borg has suffered two losses as a professional MMA fighter and they both came in the UFC, those losses came to Dustin Ortiz and Justin Scoggins. Borg has seen his last four fights go the distance and it has been over two years since he got a finish.
UFC 216 takes place on Saturday, October 7 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada with Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
