Nurmagomedov, Edgar Impress At UFC’s NYC Debut
Khabib Nurmagomedov reminded people who he was at UFC 205.
Without a top-10 fight in years, the oft-injured Nurmagomedov made a major statement just days after Tony Ferguson replaced him as the #1-ranked lightweight. Nurmagomedov dominated #6-ranked Michael Johnson on his way to a double wristlock submission win.
Nurmagomedov struggled with Johnson's striking in the early minutes of the fight, but took Johnson down mid-way through the first round. The fight wouldn't see action much of anywhere else.
It was a bit of a surprise that Johnson was actually able to survive to the third round. After a solid 10 minutes of pummeling on the ground, Nurmagomedov followed a series of fantastic transitions and impressive positions by applying a double wristlock. Referee John McCarthy called a stop to the fight via technical submission
“I want to fight with your chicken," Nurmagomedov told New York, in regards to Conor McGregor. Nurmagomedov cut a wild, passionate promo, making his case for a big fight.
Jeremy Stephens was looking to let people know who he was after being embarrassed by Conor McGregor at a press conference this year. Stephens looked to make that name off former Lightweight Champion
Edgar started strong and looked to be cruising through the middle of the second round, until Stephens cracked him with a big head kick. Stephens followed up with a possibly illegal knee, but couldn't finish. Edgar fought back with a vengeance, mounting Stephens and nearly choking him out to finish the round. Round three was a back and forth affair, with Edgar pulling ahead to take a unanimous decision victory.
