Musician Grimes Wants to Train to Become An ‘Elite Fighter’ in the UFC

As MMA gets more popular, it seems to draw in people from all sorts of different avenues. The UFC has had combatants that were (and still are) professional wrestlers, hockey players, ex-football stars and even a fireman. It even seems like boxers are trying to break into the sport with the Floyd Mayweather rumors and Amir Khan posing with belts. Now, it seems like indie, self-proclaimed “ADD music” maker Grimes would like to fight inside the cage. No, seriously. She’s “dead serious” about it.

“I’m just finishing up tour, then I’m going to start training for the UFC,” Grimes said to in her interview with a surprised Zane Lowe. “I would like to spend the next two years training for the UFC, upon failing that, then I will return to music,” Grimes said with a poker face.

Lowe still didn’t seem to buy that Grimes really wanted to take an hiatus from music to scrap with other lady warriors. “I have a lot of energy, I love working out, I am obsessed with the UFC and I just really want to become an elite fighter,” Grimes said. After Lowe claims she is still “bullsh-ting” him, Grimes assures this is for real. “I’m actually dead serious about this. I’m not going to make into the UFC obviously. […] I just want to go really, really hard at something totally insane that I’ve never done before and like, I know it won’t work out, but I just want to do it.”

If there ever was a time to break out into the UFC, it’d be now. The women’s divisions are blowing up with the constant, chaotic excitement of Bantamweight and with Joanna Jedrzejczyk violently reigning at Strawweight. It turns out, Grimes really is a longtime fan. Her Instagram is filled with UFC event posts and even called Amanda Nunes to win over Meisha Tate. Check out this statement she made about her “idol” Ronda Rousey before UFC 193: Rousey vs. Holm.

“Omg Ronda rousey is my idol I want to slay in coliseum and retire to Warcraft and audacious mug I am dying to see her on jan 2 fight vs holm, if I can go I will cease to exist.”

It will be interesting to see if Grimes starts to train seriously. The wafer thin, eclectic artist looks like she’d need to bulk up to even make Strawweight. But who knows, anything can happen in MMA these days. Maybe one day they’ll release a poster for UFC: Coachella.
