Miesha Tate Believes The Women’s Bantamweight Division Is In A Lull
Former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Miesha Tate retired after a unanimous decision loss to Raquel Pennington at UFC 205.
Tate still keeps an eye on the division she once ruled while in retirement and the former champion believes that the division is in a state of lull at the moment.
“We are in a bit of a drought in the 135-pound division,” Tate told MMA Junkie Radio. “But it opens opportunities for new stars to arise. We’ve just got to realize there’s always ebb and flow. We’re in a little bit of an ebb, but it’ll come back. It’ll come around.”
The current ruler of the division is Amanda Nunes, who has already defended the title successfully against Ronda Rousey, Valentina Shevchenko and the aforementioned Raquel Pennington.
One thing Tate believes could revitalize the division a little bit is if Nunes has a champion versus champion fight against UFC Womem’s Featherweight Champion Cyborg.
“I think she possesses a long enough range, enough power and enough speed to pose problems,” Tate said. “That would be a really interesting fight. Obviously if she beats Cyborg, she would without question be the greatest of all time. … She’s already kind of in that conversation right now.”
Nunes is currently out for a few months due to a medical suspension after UFC 224, it is unknown at this time whom she’ll defend the gold against next.
