Michael Bisping Still Hoping For Fight With GSP
UFC Middleweight Champion was set to defend the gold against former UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre later this year, but then UFC President Dana White canceled the fight.
Even though the fight is no longer on the schedule, the middleweight champion is still holding out hope that it will come to fruition one day.
“Georges is saying that he still wants to fight me, whether or not I have the belt – believe you me, I will have that belt – so just throwing that out there. Yoel [Romero], Robert Whittaker, they’re going to fight for the interim [title]. Of course, I will defend the belt against one of them but it sounds like me and Georges are still going to get it on. So I’m a happy man,” Bisping said on UFC Tonight.
Bisping is currently out of action at the moment as he is dealing with a knee injury, while GSP himself is dealing with an eye injury.
Despite all the potential roadblocks, the middleweight champion is still focused on the former welterweight champion.
“To my knowledge, [the eye injury was] why the fight was taking so long to materialize. Now as far as I was aware, Georges knew, the UFC knew, I knew but it wasn’t my news to talk about. It wasn’t my news to tell the public. That’s why I was still very confident in the fight happening. That’s why I’m still confident the fight is going to happen,” says Bisping.
When GSP does return to action, it is going to be the first time that GSP has competed in over four years.
