Mark Hunt May Retire When UFC Contract Ends
Mark Hunt says he's going to finish his contract before retiring.
At UFC Fight Night Auckland, seventh ranked heavyweight Mark Hunt knocked out sixth ranked Derrick Lewis in the fourth round. The forty-three-year-old Hunt says he is coming to the end of his combat sport career. He began kickboxing professionally in 1999 and has been competing in mixed-martial-arts since 2004. After his victory on Saturday, he spoke at the post-fight press conference, where he was asked about his retirement.
"I got a couple more fights on my contract and that's it. Why not see the contract done then retire. I think it's (two more fights), I don't know. ," said Hunt.
At UFC 200 Hunt faced Brock Lesnar. The bout was originally a loss on his record until it was overturned to a no contest because of a failed drug test by Lesnar. The Samoan then lost to Alistair Overeem at UFC 209, and because of Overeem's past drug test failures and other issues, Hunt does not think Overeem or Lesnar are a good measuring stick for Hunt's place in the division.
"I'm doing what I'm doing. I'm beating the top ten guys. I said if I can't beat these guys then I would retire, if these guys are too good for me. But, the last two guys (Overeem and Lesnar) were cheaters and this guy here (Lewis) he's number six and I beat him. He's younger than me," said Hunt. " I don't like listening to anyone saying 'you can't do this.' Otherwise I wouldn't be a fighter," he added.
Hunt also said he would like to fight Junior Dos Santos at the upcoming UFC card in Japan.
