Malcolm Gordon Wants To Follow In Foot Steps Of Georges St-Pierre, Sam Stout And Mark Hominick
Malcolm Gordon welcomes any and all Georges St-Pierre comparisons as he follows in the footsteps of Canada’s mixed martial arts pioneers.
Gordon (12-4) looks to bounce back from a disappointing UFC debut with his sophomore fight against Su Mudaerji at UFC Vegas 15. Canada has promising talents in Gordon, Hakeem Dawodu and Tanner Boser. In an attempt to satiate the country’s hunger for a new superstar, it seems every UFC fighter from up North is slapped with the GSP comparisons. Gordon, for one, welcomes it.
“You get in the sport to try and do something incredible,” the flyweight fighter expressed. “Make a difference. I grew up watching GSP. I have a huge amount of respect for that man and what he did because it’s pretty crazy. As we’re talking about some Canadian greats, I was brought up around pioneers like Mark Hominick and Sam Stout and Chris Horodecki.”
“Mark Hominick made it all the way to a world title fight against Jose Aldo. He once again put Canada on the map in that card… Sam Stout had multiple Fight of the Night wars and back-and-forth bouts that were incredible to watch. He was always a fun, stand-out guy. You knew you were going to watch a stand-up brawl,” Gordon continued. “Although he never made it to the UFC, he still did a lot in every other organization that he was in. You got to give him a lot of credit and respect. A majority of the time he was a lot younger than his opponents and he still accomplished so much. He’s also probably one of the toughest people I’ve ever met.”
Gordon, 30, says one look at his regional success paints a picture of how far he can go at 125-pounds.
“I think I have the tools and what it takes in this division,” he stated. “I’ve done pretty well for myself so far up until this point. I’ve been a champion in multiple organizations and given the right circumstances when I’m given a full training camp, I look unstoppable in most of those bouts.”
UFC Vegas 15 takes place from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. The ESPN+ card is headlined by Curtis Blaydes vs. Derrick Lewis. Keep up with Fightful for all your fight night coverage.
