Jussier Formiga Motivated By Future Title Shot
Brazilian fighter Jussier Formiga gets a home country fight this weekend at UFC Fight Night 106 and he will be taking on Ray Borg.
Formiga says he is motivated for his fight on Saturday Night because he believes a UFC Flyweight Title shot is in his future.
“I think I have very good weapons with which to face Demetrious Johnson, starting with my grappling,” he said to MMA Junkie. “I also learn something new every day when training boxing, wrestling and muay Thai. After Demetrious faced Tim Elliott, we learned a lot. He’s not as unbeatable as his opponents used to think. He can be defeated. I was very motivated by Tim Elliott’s performance.”
The Brazilian fighter has yet to challenge for UFC gold, but he previously fought UFC veteran Ian McCall for the Tachi Palace Fights Flyweight Title. A split decision loss to Henry Cejudo this past November was the last time we saw Formiga in the Octagon.
“Regarding facing Cejudo, I’ll say this: There are days in which things just don’t work as expected,” Formiga said. “It was a split decision in his favor. It could have gone my way, too. Life goes on. My victory over Dustin Ortiz was very satisfactory. He has a good name in the division. He’s young, strong, and fast, with good grappling and striking. That win gave me a sense of ‘mission accomplished.'”
UFC Fight Night 106 takes place on Saturday, March 11 from the Centro de Formacao Olimpica do Nordeste in Fortaleza, Brazil with Kelvin Gastelum and Vitor Belfort headlining, the main card airs live on Fox Sports 1.
