Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier II Confirmed For UFC 214
The rematch that everybody has been waiting for is set for UFC 214 as UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier is defending the gold against former champion Jon Jones.
Cormier (19-1-0) is going to be making the third defense of his championship, having previously defended it against Anthony Johnson and Alexander Gustafsson. Cormier will also be entering the fight riding a four fight winning streak and he hasn’t suffered a defeat over well over two years. Prior to coming to the UFC in 2013, the champion also won the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix by defeating Josh Barnett in the finals.
Jones (22-1-0) won the first meeting against Cormier at UFC 182, that victory for the fighter came by way of unanimous decision. Jones was set to face Cormier in a rematch at UFC 200, but was pulled from the fight after a failed drug test. Jones hasn’t suffered a defeat in almost eight years and that lone defeat was a disqualification loss to Matt Hamill due to illegal elbow strikes.
The two were originally scheduled to fight at UFC 200 last July, before a failed drug test caused Jones to withdraw days before the event. Jones tested positive for clomiphene in an out-of-competition drug test that forced him out of his UFC 200 unification bout with Daniel Cormier. Jones would later claim that he ingested a tainted sexual-performance substance, something that was later confirmed by USADA. However, the case arbiters ruled that Jones should have followed up and done his homework on the substance he was taking, calling him 'reckless.'
UFC 214 takes place on Saturday, July 29 from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California with no main event announced at this time. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
