That ‘good news’ Jon Jones had? It could apply to Brock Lesnar as well.
As we speculated on the Fightful.com Podcast over recent weeks, it appears as if the positive energy from Jon Jones’ recent Instagram post might be carrying over to WWE Superstar and UFC 200’s Brock Lesnar. The two tested positive for Hydroxy-clomiphene, an estrogen blocker. Jones also tested positive for Letrozole metabolite. Both are “specified substances” under the World Anti-Doping Agency policy, and carry only a one-year ban as opposed to the standard two-year suspension.
MMA Fighting provided an rundown of the WADA code in relation to the substances.
There is a greater likelihood that these (specified) substances could be susceptible to a credible non-doping explanation, and therefore allow a tribunal more flexibility when making a sanctioning decision.
Lesnar failed an out-of-competition test on June 28, and a UFC 200 post-fight drug test July 9, while Jones tested positive from a June 16 sample. Jones was removed from his UFC 200 bout with Daniel Cormier, and both were temporarily suspended. Lesnar won’t face additional punishment for failing two tests, and was not disciplined by his other employer, World Wrestling Entertainment. Both men are also eligible to go to arbitration over the matter if they don’t accept the USADA disciplinary sanctions. Both fighters could also be subject to fines, and in Brock Lesnar’s case, his UFC 200 win against Mark Hunt being overturned.
Estrogen blockers such as clomiphene are typically used when reducing the amount of estrogen your body produces and to stimulate natural testosterone production after the use of anabolic steroids. They’re also often used when trying to prevent testosterone turning into estrogen.
Lesnar and Jones will have hearings take place in front of the Nevada Athletic Commission this fall, but the commission is not required to follow USADA’s lead as it pertains to suspensions.
Jones turned heads on August 14, when he said in a social media post that he had ‘good news’ coming in regards to his USADA situation, saying “I’m sure you guys are curious about this USADA situation. Obviously, I can’t get into it because it’s still pending, but what I can say is we have found out lots of really good news, and I’m expecting to be back in the Octagon really soon.’
For now, Lesnar continues to compete in the WWE — somewhat. The former UFC, NCAA, IWGP and WWE Champion performed at Sunday’s Summerslam, but will be taking time off as he has a limited number of contracted dates set.
