John Kavanagh Would Bet That McGregor vs. Nurmagomedov Happens This Year
Former two division UFC champion Conor McGregor hasn’t appeared in the Octagon since defeating Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC Lightweight Title at UFC 205.
John Kavanagh not only believes that McGregor returns to action this year, but would bet everything on the fact that the Irishman would fight UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in that return to action.
“It’s the obvious fight, as his coach and as a fan,” Kavanagh said in an interview with Robin Black. “As a fan of MMA, it’s the fight I want to see as well. I would almost bet anything — almost bet anything — that fight happens before the end of the year.”
Nurmagomedov has said that he would like to defend the gold in the Fall, now that the observance of Ramadan has come to an end.
Kavanagh is so confident the fight will come together that the longtime coach cannot imagine any different scenarios in which it wouldn’t happen.
“I can’t imagine it not happening,” Kavanagh said.
McGregor was stripped of the title the day before UFC 223, where Nurmagomedov defeated Al Iaquinta by unanimous decision to become the UFC Lightweight Champion.
