Joe Rogan’s Theory On Conor McGregor’s UFC 257 Loss: “I Think It’s Inactivity”

UFC commentator Joe Rogan shared some of his thoughts on former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor losing at UFC 257 to Dustin Poirier in their rematch.

Rogan was speaking on episode #101 of his Joe Rogan Experience MMA Show with former UFC middleweight title challenger Travis Lutter and current UFC middleweight contender Kevin Holland, where he analyzed McGregor’s performance in the second-round knockout loss to Poirier back on January 23.

“There’s moments in that fight [UFC 257] where he was having big success. He hurt Dustin at one point in time with a big left hand, but that fu**ing low calf kick. That low calf kick is a beast,” Rogan said (h/t Essentially Sports). “He was still pretty fu*ing rich when he fought Eddie Alvarez, he was already a multi-millionaire. I don’t necessarily think it’s a rich thing. I don’t know if that affects him that much, but I do think it’s inactivity and I do think Dustin got a lot better.”

The comedian, podcaster, and martial artist continued on to praise Poirier’s improvement in the fight and crediting the fact that now at 155-pounds he doesn’t have to be as depleted as he was in the first fight with McGregor at UFC 178 which took place at 145 pounds. Rogan also talked about how McGregor’s stance may have played into the loss.

“At 145, Dustin was depleted and diminished. At 155 he’s fu*ing huge, he doesn’t even look like a 55’er he looks like a 70’er…The thing is he’s [McGregor] heavy on that front leg, wide karate stance and he’s always doing this,” he said. “When that leg is available for the low calf kick, that changes everything, changes your whole approach, and Conor is also a guy never been known to switch back and forth. He doesn’t like to have his left leg forward, that’s not a common thing for him. Once his leg is getting chewed up, it’s not like he can fight just as good from orthodox.”
