Joanna Jedrzejczyk Says Doctors, Not Coaches Failed Her At UFC 217

Former UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk lost the belt to Rose Namajunas last November at UFC 217.

The former champion has since left Perfecting Athletes, which was helping her cut weight leading up to the fight. Jedrzejczyk admits the weight cut was tough, which is why she says the blame falls on the doctors and not the coaches for the UFC 217 mishap.

“Many people asked me if I change coaches, club … My answer was ‘no’ because my coaches did their best to be in the best possible shape. The doctor, who had a big impact on how I felt 30 hours before the fight, failed. People who are not in sports, in which you need to watch this weight, do not know what it’s eating. It often has negative effects on our health and even life. I am asking for patience, just like I have to wait for the day when I will receive a straw weight belt,” Jedrzejczyk said to Polsat Sport.

Jedrzejczyk gets a chance to reclaim the gold when she faces Namajunas is a rematch at UFC 223 this April.

One huge reason Jedrzejczyk says the nutrition team failed is because the fighter claims that she devotes a lot of time to everything leading up to a fight.

“The preparations took place very often, but I am very focused. I devote every free moment to regeneration, proper nutrition and training. I know that in sports, I win and lose, and I know that my last fight did not go my way, because people from my team failed me,” says Jedrzejczyk.

UFC 223 takes place on Saturday, April 7 from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York with Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
