One of the greatest Irish boxers of all time is Steve Collins, who held the WBO Super Middleweight Title and the WBO Middleweight Title during his career.
If the potential super fight does come together, the Irish boxing great believes that McGregor could pull the upset.
“Maybe Mayweather has the same feeling as me, and maybe that’s why the fight has happened sooner, but I can see how Conor can beat Mayweather with the right coaching,” he said to MMA Junkie. “I could tell you how he could beat Mayweather. I can see him doing it. A victory for Conor is something that can definitely happen, and I think he will shock the world. He has the tools and the ability. If he prepares the right way, he won’t just beat Mayweather – he’ll stop him.”
While Collins is arguably one of the greatest Irish boxers of all time, McGregor is widely considered the greatest Irish MMA fighter of all time.
There has been no date set yet for the fight and Collins is under the impression that the fight should have happened already.
“It’s a guaranteed money-maker. Whether it’s through curiosity or belief, or just wanting to see one martial art against another, all the ingredients are there to make this happen. I thought it would have happened sooner, if anything, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all if we see these guys in the ring soon,” says Collins.
Mayweather Promotions recently reserved the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for August 26, but nothing has been made official yet.
