Ion Cutelaba vs. Magomed Ankalaev Nixed From UFC Vegas 8 Over COVID-19 Test

Ion Cutelaba vs. Magomed Ankalaev might just be cursed.

Cutelaba vs. Ankalaev was removed from UFC Vegas 8 hours before the event due to a positive COVID-19 test. The UFC made the announcement in a statement published on Tuesday.

“Due to a positive COVID-19 test, Ion Cutelaba’s light heavyweight fight against Magomed Ankalaev has been removed from today’s undercard and will be rescheduled for a later date,” the statement read.

It is unclear from the statement which fighter tested positive but MMA Junkie reports it was Cutelaba. The rivals first met at UFC Norfolk in February. Ankalaev earned a controversial first-round TKO stoppage, after which it seemed Cutelaba was playing possum. The fight was rebooked for April 18 but the entire card was scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was again scheduled for August 15 but Cutelaba tested positive for COVID-19.

UFC Vegas 8 will proceed with 10 cards, including Robbie Lawler vs. Neil Magny in the co-main event.

UFC Vegas 8 takes place from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, August 29. Anthony Smith vs. Aleksandar Rakic will headline the card in a clash of ranked light heavyweights. Keep up with Fightful for all your fight night coverage.
