Huge Welterweight Fight Set For UFC 205
A fan-favorite duel has been set for UFC’s debut in New York City.
After rumors ran rampant over the last couple of weeks, the UFC has confirmed #7 Welterweight Donald Cerrone (31-7) will take on former UFC Welterweight Champion, #1 Robbie Lawler (27-11) at UFC 205. The fight will not serve as the main event, and will be a three-round bout.
Cerrone, who is also the #6-ranked lightweight in the world, is fresh off of an August 20 win at UFC 202 over Rick Story. Cerrone is 3-0 in 2016 after he moved up to Welterweight following an unsuccessful attempt at dethroning Rafael dos Anjos from atop the lightweight division in December. Cerrone has also picked up three “Performance of the Night” bonuses along the way.
Lawler looks to push his way back to a title fight, as he dropped the Welterweight Championship to Tyron Woodley in a first round KO loss at UFC 201 in July. Prior to that bout, Lawler had won 8 of 9 fights, including two successful defenses of the welterweight crown. Lawler has wins over the likes of Carlos Condit, Johny Hendricks, Matt Brown, Josh Koscheck, Matt Lindland, Frank Trigg and Rory MacDonald.
UFC 205 will be the company’s debut in New York state, as a ban on regulated MMA was lifted this year. The event takes place November 12 at Madison Square Garden, and will air on pay-per-view, following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.
