Gustafsson Willing To Wait For Potential Title Shot

Alexander Gustafsson currently sits at #1 in the UFC Light Heavyweight Division rankings and theoretically sits next in line for a shot at the UFC Light Heavyweight Title.

Despite the fact the he has challenged for the title twice before, the light heavyweight contender is willing to sit back and wait for his next title opportunity.

“Daniel (Cormier) knows I’m here to stay, that I’m waiting for my rematch against him,” Gustafsson told Viaplay Fighting. “I’m not in a hurry. I’ve had longer stretches between fights than this. I’ll be fine. I want the belt. I want a title fight. We’ll see if Volkan vs. Cormier gets confirmed. Then I’ll fight the winner and … I’m pretty sure I’ll fight ‘DC.'”

Volkan Oezdemir is a ranked one spot behind Gustafsson in the UFC rankings and even Cormier himself recently stated that he wants to fight Oezdemir next.

Gustafsson would prefer to fight DC for the title, but he also wouldn’t mind fighting Oezdemir to get revenge for a training partner.

“I want to beat ‘DC.’ I want to avenge my loss. Because of that, I want ‘DC’ to win,” Gustafsson said. “But if Volkan were to win, that’s fine with me. Then I’ll avenge Jimi (Manuwa, who lost to Oezdemir in July).”

The top ranked Gustafsson’s previous title shots came against Jon Jones at UFC 165 and to Cormier at UFC 192.
