UFC welterweight fighter Gunnar Nelson is a longtime training partner of UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor.
McGregor is currently attempting to get a boxing match made between himself and Floyd Mayweather Jr., which is expected to potentially happen later this year.
The welterweight star feels that McGregor could possibly retire once the boxing match is over with.
"It will depend (retirement) on certain things. Money is not the only thing he cares about, at all. He does care about it a lot, but if a fight excites him and he thinks it's a great challenge — if it's making history and all that kind of stuff — he'll do it,” Nelson said to ESPN.
As far as his UFC run goes, the lightweight champion hasn’t fought since defeating Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC Lightweight Title at UFC 205.
At the very least, the training partner of McGregor feels that the champion would take a year off after the bout with Mayweather Jr.
"He's got a lot of money now that keeps him occupied," Nelson said. "He can do a lot of stuff. I think he'd be all right for a year. He always has something cooking. Right now, it's the Mayweather fight, and that seems like it's going to happen. I think he'll keep himself busy one way or another."
Nelson recently competed at UFC Fight Night 107, where he defeated Alan Jouban by second round submission.
