GSP On Stephen Thompson: “He’s Not A Secret Weapon Anymore”
Former UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre will be returning to the Octagon later this year, where he will be challenging UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping.
Stephen Thompson is a longtime training partner of GSP and he will be challenging Tyron Woodley for the UFC Welterweight Title at UFC 209, a title GSP once held.
The Canadian MMA legend has a lot of praise for his longtime training partner.
“He has the tools to become champion,” St-Pierre said in an official UFC video. “It’s only a matter of time for him and he’s getting better every day. I called him for a secret weapon, but now he’s not a secret weapon anymore. ‘Wonderboy’ is the best striker I’ve seen in my life.”
Woodley and Thompson fought for the first time at UFC 205, where the two welterweights fought to a majority draw. GSP has never fought Woodley before, but Woodley has been calling out the former welterweight champion for quite some time now.
As far as GSP goes, if he is successful at becoming the UFC Middleweight Champion later this year, that would put him in a class that includes BJ Penn, Randy Couture and Conor McGregor as fighters to hold UFC gold in two different weight classes.
