Firas Zahabi Says GSP Would Come Out Of Retirement For A Mega Fight
Former two division UFC champion Georges St. Pierre recently announced his retirement from professional MMA competition.
Firas Zahabi was GSP’s coach for a good portion of the fighter’s career and he believes GSP would end the retirement if the right mega fight came about.
“There are other names out there that can build themselves to a super megastar status and entice Georges to come back. Because the truth of the matter is I don’t think Georges wants to win a belt, defend it every three, four months, protect it and go back to what he used to do,” Zahabi said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show (via Bloody Elbow). “I think those days are done. That would take too much out of his life. But to come in for a mega-fight years down the line, I think that would be tempting to Georges. He might say no, and he might feel no, and he might be like ‘that’s it, I’m hanging it up.’ But Georges is a really competitive guy.”
A retired GSP said he was trying to put a fight together with UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov before retiring, citing the UFC for not wanting to put the bout together.
Zahabi says that if GSP sees a supposedly unjumpable hurdle, it could lure the fighter back into action.
“If there’s an unjumpable hurdle, he’ll want to try and jump it. That’s just the kind of guy he is,” Zahabi said. “He’s an incredibly competitive person.”
GSP last competed at UFC 217, defeating Michael Bisping to win the UFC Middleweight Championship.
