Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury 2 Preview:

As far as predicting the upcoming rematch between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury for the WBC Heavyweight title on February 22, there are two schools of thought: Either Wilder’s right hand does the inevitable and knocks Fury out, or Fury’s toughness, mobility and overall boxing ability can outlast Wilder and win a decision on the scorecards.

On paper, both arguments are just as likely to happen given what we saw in their first encounter back in December 2018 and really, we saw both of those arguments in play. Wilder dropped Fury in the 12th round and although Fury got back up, it was after a long 10-count that in many cases, would have reached 10 but wasn’t the case with Fury. But then again, many believe that Fury did just enough to win the first fight on the scorecards, but a draw has left us here just days away from the rematch.

When you look at both fighters, there are perhaps a lot more questions surrounding Fury than Wilder. For Wilder, the question simply is this: can Wilder’s right hand put Fury out for good? The answer is yes. Wilder’s devastating right hand landing on his opponents is about a sure thing in boxing as anything today.

No one, not even Fury, is expecting a fundamentally different Wilder this time around. What you see is what you get: a tall, incredibly powerful fighter who has knocked out, or at least knocked down, every fighter put in front of him. Fundamentally, he may not be the best heavyweight today, but his power more than makes up for it.

“In that first fight I was probably 50% or less coming into that fight. I didn’t fight like I normally fight. There’s a lot of things that I did that I don’t normally do. Especially when I look back at that fight, me and Jay can pinpoint so much, like look man, I don’t even do that. Why did I did that? Why did I do this? I know why I did it but I don’t know why I did it. It’s just one of those things that you know why you did it because moving forward holding my guard high swinging swinging with no hope, just just doing certain things because in this fight I felt like I had the opportunity at that moment in time for me; that was the date for me, for the heavyweight division in America to be put on notice,” Wilder said in a media conference call.

Fury, on the other hand, has a lot of questions. The biggest one of them all might just be the change in trainer from Ben Davison to SugarHill Steward shortly after Fury’s win over Otto Wallin this past September.

“I had a good defensive coach, Ben Davison. We worked a lot on defense every single day for two years. It was defense, defense, defense. So I needed an aggressive trainer. I worked with SugarHill in the past. I knew he was a good guy. I knew we got along well, which is very important. Communication is key to any good relationship, and that’s what I brought him in, and it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, ever,” Fury said in a media conference call a week-and-a-half before the fight.

This is truly a fascinating fight to pick. It’s not often that you get to have a fight where you can legitimately make a strong case for either boxer winning. Fury, who many believe to be the better boxer, should have won the first fight on the scorecards, according to many, but Wilder’s power, especially in his right hand, is downright devastating.

Any perceived lack of boxing fundamentals (and I believe Wilder is underrated in that regard) is hardly a problem for Wilder as his power more than makes up for it. However, it should be noted that Wilder doesn’t have the greatest track record in the world winning rounds when he’s not seriously hurting guys or knocking them out. I think Wilder will drop Fury at least once in this rematch. It’s almost impossible to not expect that from Wilder at this point. The question is: can Fury get back up from being knocked down again? Do I think Wilder could knock Fury out? Absolutely. However, Fury’s proven to be tough enough to withstand punishment in the ring and I think Fury, under the tutelage of new trainer SugarHill Steward, will have a smarter gameplan this time around and find a way to win rounds a little more convincingly than in the first fight. Fury’s already proven that he can find ways to tag Wilder and go the distance against him and we’re not expecting a fundamentally different version of Wilder come February 22nd.

Regardless of who wins, if the fight is competitive enough, a trilogy fight could follow, which could be a great thing for boxing in terms of creating new fans.

Latest On Canelo Alvarez, Gennadiy Golovkin:

Canelo Alvarez still has yet to pick an opponent for a planned May bout and time is running out.

At first, there was a potential fight against middleweight secondary titlist Ryota Murata in Japan, but that eventually fell through. Also fights against Billy Joe Saunders and Callum Smith, both super middleweight champions, initially seemed to be going nowhere.

The only thing that seemed to be a guarantee is that Alvarez won’t be fighting at light heavyweight to defend the WBO title he won back in November.

At this point, the one name that seems to still be in play is one against Saunders, which would more than likely take place at 168 pounds, where Saunders is the WBO champion. If Alvarez were to go down to that weight and win the WBO title, he would officially be a four-division champion, given how many don’t consider the WBA “Regular” title that he won back in 2018 to not be a real world title.

For Saunders, it would be the major fight that he has been looking for for years. Ever since he was the WBO middleweight champion years ago, Saunders had been looking to fight either Alvarez or Gennadiy Golovkin.

According to Mike Coppinger, the two fighters haven’t agreed to terms yet, but they’re about 95 percent there, and the sides are determined to finalize a deal this week for a May 2 super middleweight title fight on DAZN. The only thing that is holding up the deal from being completed is a discrepancy with Saunders’ minimum in his contract.

As for Golovkin, his upcoming IBF middleweight title defense against mandatory challenger Kamil Szeremeta has been delayed due to a reported calf injury.

Originally, the fight was planned to take place in late February, but was then moved back to March 28. However, that fight date got moved back to April and Golden Boy Promotions filled that March 28 date with its own DAZN card and the target date was then pushed back again to April.

Now, it’s likely that the fight won’t take place until at least May, but is likely to land in June. However, with that fight being pushed back, there are a couple of things that could change as a result. Firstly, if that fight doesn’t happen until June, then the reported plans for a third fight against Alvarez for September might be a little too much to ask for Golovkin as he would then be make a fairly quick turnaround for such a big fight.

Also, the status of potential undercard fights could be up in the air. Originally, there were talks of potentially putting a WBO cruiserweight title bout between Krzysztof Glowacki and Lawrence Okolie to take place on the Golovkin-Szeremeta undercard, at least according to a WBO source.

With Golovkin potentially out until June, the placement of Glowacki vs. Okolie, which still hasn’t been officially signed, on that undercard is likely up in the air.

However, if all goes well for both Alvarez and Golovkin, expect DAZN to heavuly push for a third fight this year, which could potentially help out with its problem in getting new subscribers.

News And Notes From Around The World: United States:

• WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo did confirm on the “Ak & Barak Show” on Sirius XM Radio that Eddie Hearn has reached out about potentially fighting WBO champion Demetrius Andrade. Charlo also said his team told him not to respond because the offer was deemed inadequate. A fight between Charlo and Andrade has long been rumored and Hearn’s interest in both Charlo and brother Jermell dates back even longer, at least since the time DAZN revealed its plans for a U.S. expansion.
• Golden Boy Promotions officially announced that Vergil Ortiz Jr. will face Samuel Vargas in the main event of a DAZN card on March 28 from The Forum in Inglewood, California. The co-main event is Pablo Cesar Cano vs. Michael Perez in a 12-round fight. Below are the undercard bouts announced.

– Azat Hovhannisyan vs. Jose Sammartin: WBA Interim super bantamweight title

– Rashidi Ellis vs. Sergio Ortega

• Golden Boy Promotions has signed Shane Mosley Jr. to a co-promotional deal. Mosley fought in the 2018 edition of The Contender where he lost in the finals to Brandon Adams, who went on to challenge Charlo for the WBC middleweight title in 2019. Mosley Jr. is 15-3 as a pro.
• Top Rank announced that WBA and IBF bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue will face WBO champion John Riel Casimero in a three-belt unification at the Mandalay Bay Events Center on April 25. The fight will headline an ESPN+ card. Inoue’s move to the bantamweight division has largely been highlighted by huge, swift knockouts on numerous top contenders and champions. Inoue entered the World Boxing Super Series bantamweight tournament and advanced to the finals with knockout wins over Juan Carlos Payano and Emmanuel Rodriguez, both wins coming in the first or second round. In the tournament finals, Inoue unified the WBA and IBF titles with a unanimous decision win over Nonito Donaire in a 2019 “Fight of the Year” contender. Casimero, a three-division titlist, has been riding a huge wave of momentum after losing to super flyweight contender Jonas Sultan in 2017 and then moving up to bantamweight. Casimero won the interim WBO bantamweight title in April 2019 with a win over Ricardo Espinoza and then scored a win against Cesar Ramirez last August. Back in November, Casimero stopped Zolani Tete to win the WBO world title. Also announced for the show is a 10-round bantamweight bout between contenders Joshua Greer Jr. and Jason Moloney, a fight that Fightful was able to confirm was already a done deal a week before the official announcement, as well as former WBA “Regular” super featherweight champion Andrew Cancio taking on Tyler McCreary. This will be Cancio’s Top Rank debut.
• Top Rank is loading up on not one, but two Madison Square Garden shows in March headlined by two of its young featherweight stars. The first of these shows will take place on March 14, airing on ESPN, and will be headlined by WBO featherweight champion Shakur Stevenson making his first title defense against multi-time title challenger Miguel Marriaga. The co-main event of that card is Jessie Magdaleno vs. Sakaria Lukas in a 10-round featherweight bout. As for the other show, Top Rank will have its annual St. Patrick’s Day show on March 17, to be streamed on ESPN+, and will feature Irish featherweight contender Michael Conlan taking on Belmar Preciado. In the co-main event, rising women’s boxing star Mikaela Mayer facing Melissa Hernandez.
• Matchroom Boxing announced that former unified cruiserweight champion Murat Gassiev will make his heavyweight debut against Jerry Forrest on the February 29 DAZN card from Frisco, Texas. Israil Madrimov will fight Charlie Navarro in a WBA junior middleweight title eliminator. Also announced is former WBO heavyweight champion Joseph Parker taking Shawndell Winters. On the undercard of the February 29 Matchroom Boxing on DAZN card is unbeaten prospect Jesse Rodriguez taking on Marco Sustaita. Also on the card is Leo Ruiz Acevedo vs. Dennis Knifechief. Prospects Diego Pacheco and Alexis Espino will be in action in undercard fights.
• Unbeaten prospect Rolando Romero entered the WBA rankings at No. 10 at lightweight. Vasiliy Lomachenko holds the organization’s “Super” title while Gervonta Davis holds the “Regular” title.
• Jarrell Miller, who was set to fight Anthony Joshua last year before Miller failed multiple drug tests ended that bout, has signed a multi-fight promotional deal with Top Rank. Miller is co-promoted by Greg Cohen Promotions and Salita Promotions and will make his Top Rank on ESPN debut in 2020.
• James Kirkland will face Marcos Hernandez in a 10-round middleweight bout in the main event of the March 14 PBC on FS1 card from the MGM National National Harbor in Maryland. Eimantas Stanionis vs. Justin DeLoach in a 10-round welterweight bout is the co-main event.
• The card for the February 28 ShoBox: The New Generation tripleheader has been announced, taking place at Sam’s Town Live in Las Vegas. Here are the bouts, which will feature several top prospects from Mayweather Promotions, set for the telecast: Malik Hawkins vs. Keith Hunter, Richardson Hitchins vs. Nick DeLomba, Kevin Newman II vs. Kalvin Richardson.
• Golden Boy Promotions announced a number of fights for its DAZN Thursday Night Fights card taking place on March 19 from the Avalon Hollywood: Joet Gonzalez vs. Chris Avalos, Lamont Roach Jr. vs. Neil John Tabanao, Marlen Esparza vs. Lucia Nunez, Richard Acevedo vs. Jeremy Ramos, Rudy Garcia vs. Andrew Strode, Jousce Gonzalez vs. Jose Meza, Nick Sullivan vs. Marquese Steward.
• Efe Ajagba will take on Razvan Cojanu in the co-main event fight of the March 7 PBC on FOX card from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Here is the non-TV undercard: Zachary Ochoa vs. TBA, Robert Alfonso vs. Carlos Negron, Steven Torres vs. TBA, Francis Hogan (pro debut) vs. TBA.
• Banner Promotions has signed undefeated heavyweight Isaac Munoz Gutierrez (12-0-1, 10 KO) to a co-promotional deal with United Promotions.
• Showtime officially announced that former bantamweight titlist Luis Nery will face Aaron Alameda in a super bantamweight bout taking place on March 28 in Las Vegas. Otto Wallin vs. Lucas Browne and Joseph George vs. Marcos Escudero were confirmed to be on the TV undercard.
• Unbeaten lightweight prospect Raymond Muratalla has signed a promotional deal with Top Rank Boxing.

News And Notes From Around The World: United Kingdom:

• IBF featherweight champion Josh Warrington’s deal with Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions expired and wasted little time in signing with Matchroom Boxing on a multi-fight deal. The deal comes a little bit out of left field as there was some level of understanding that serious negotiations for a potential title unification between Warrington and WBO titleholder Shakur Stevenson for a summer showdown, possibly in the United Kingdom. This doesn’t theoretically eliminate that potential fight from happening down the road, it’s borderline lunacy that fight is definitely happening this summer now. Warren has a working relationship with Top Rank, who promotes Stevenson and it’s hard to imagine Top Rank and Matchroom working together for a fight that could have easily been made while Stevenson remained with Warren. Stevenson is currently scheduled to defend his title in March against Miguel Marriaga, but that fight’s purpose is simply to keep Stevenson busy so that he didn’t have to deal with ring rust for the Warrington fight. Now, Top Rank and Queensberry Promotions lost out on a fight that would have done great business in the United Kingdom, specifically Leeds, England where Warrington comes from. For Warrington to have any major fights, he will have to target someone like Xu Can, who holds the WBA “Regular” featherweight title, at the end of the year. A fight against Stevenson is likely dead for now and WBC Gary Russell Jr. has long targeted a fight against Leo Santa Cruz (the WBA “Super” champion at featherweight and super featherweight) or else he would move up in weight, so that fight is likely not happening soon. Regardless, Warrington has been ordered to fight mandatory challenger Kid Galahad next and it wouldn’t be a surprise if that fight ends up taking place in the summer. Non-UK fans will definitely be sour on that fight as their first encounter last year was anything but an entertaining one.
• Frank Warren has officially announced Daniel Dubois vs. Joe Joyce, set to take place at The O2 in London on April 11. Big heavyweight fight in the UK featuring two of the division’s top unbeaten, rising stars.
• David Avanesyan, who makes a strong case to be the best under-the-radar welterweight not born in the U.S. or U.K. today, will defend his EBU European Welterweight Title against Josh Kelly in a match at The O2 in London on March 28. The fight will be streamed on DAZN in the U.S. and on Sky Sports in the U.K.
• Matchroom Boxing revealed Lewis Ritson will face Miguel Vazquez in the main event of a card from the Newcastle Utilita Arena on April 4. A number of notable fights were announced, including the following:

– Geovana Peres vs. Savannah Marshall: WBO Light Heavyweight Title

– Fabio Wardley vs. Simon Vallily: English Heavyweight Title

– Kash Farooq vs. TBA

– Joseph Laws vs. TBA

• A fight between Mikael Lawal and Luke Watkins to determine a mandatory challenger for Richard Riakporhe’s British cruiserweight title has yet to be made because negotiations are still ongoing. A purse bid was supposed to happen, but it’s now been postponed for one month, per the request of both parties. Usually, whenever purse bids are postponed, it is a sign that they are close to securing a deal or at the very least, talks have progressed well.
• A purse bid has been ordered for a British middleweight title bout between titleholder Liam Williams and Andrew Robinson for March 11 with the fight to take place by the end of June 2020.
• Anthony Fowler will defend the WBA International junior middleweight belt against Jack Flatley on the undercard of Scott Quigg vs. Jono Carroll at the Manchester Arena on March 7.
• Matchroom Boxing announced that Rohan Murdock and Zach Parker, ranked No. 1 and No. 2 by the WBO at super middleweight, respectively, will face off on the March 7 card from the Manchester Arena. While this fight is one between the WBO’s top two ranked super middleweights, it is not a title eliminator as some initially believed. The fight will be for a regional title, but it’s possible the winner could be in line for a title shot, regardless of who it is against, in the next 12 months. It’s just a matter of what happens with current champion Billy Joe Saunders and if he fights Canelo Alvarez next. If that fight happens, and Canelo wins, then the situation becomes a lot more murky because there is almost no conceivable way DAZN, Canelo and Golden Boy Promotions would be even remotely interested in that fight, which is almost guaranteed to tank business-wise.
• New York-based welterweight prospect Reshat Mati will fight on the Scott Quigg vs. Jono Carroll undercard on March 7 at the Manchester Arena in Mati’s UK debut.

News And Notes From Around The World: Other News And Notes:

• Top Rank has officially announced that unified WBC and IBF light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev will face off against Meng Fanlong on March 28. The fight will headline an ESPN-televised card from the Videotron Centre in Quebec City, Canada. Back in October 2019, Beterbiev became the first unified champion at 175 pounds since Andre Ward held the WBA, WBO and IBF titles back in 2017. In the main event of a Top Rank card televised on ESPN, Beterbiev defeated Oleksandr Gvozdyk in the 10th round to add the WBC title to his collection. Beterbiev remains the only world champion today to have every single fight by knockout, winning all 15 of his pro bouts inside the distance. Fanlong is looking to join a handful of Chinese-born boxers to become a champion and the first to do so as a light heavyweight. Fanlong became the mandatory challenger to the IBF light heavyweight title when he defeated Adam Deines in a title eliminator back in 2019.
• Shortly after it was announced that he would be named the WBO “Super Champion” at flyweight, Kosei Tanaka stated he is vacating the WBO flyweight title in order to move up in weight and become a four-division titlist. Tanaka was then named the mandatory challenger to Kazuto Ioka’s WBO super flyweight champion with both sides being ordered to negotiate a deal or else a purse bid will be issued in late February.
• Heavyweight contender Oscar Rivas, has inked a multi-fight promotional agreement with Top Rank. Rivas, who is co-promoted by Groupe Yvon Michel, will return on an ESPN platform in 2020.
• Banner Promotions has signed junior welterweight prospect Jamshidbek Najmitdinov (14-1, 11 KOs) to a co-promotional deal with Uprising Promotions. Najmitdinov has won five straight fights after losing to former world champion Viktor Postol back in 2017.
• WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has revealed that his organization has lowered the amount of rounds for all regional title fights, no more than 10 rounds. Only WBC World and Silver title fights will be 12 rounds.
• A deal was reached between WBO junior middleweight champion Patrick Teixeira and mandatory challenger Brian Castano has been reached. The fight is expected to take place in the coming months but no further details have been announced.
• TGB Promotions won a purse bid for the WBC bantamweight title fight between Nordine Oubaali and Nonito Donaire with a winning bid of $401,000. There’s no further details on when that fight is going to happen, but TGB Promotions winning the bid means there is a 99.99 percent the fight will land on a PBC card, likely in late spring or early summer given how TGB Promotions does a lot of work with PBC.
• Matchroom Boxing Italy’s next show is taking place in Verona on March 27 and will be streamed on DAZN. Francesco Patera will face Devis Boschiero for the interim WBA lightweight title while Gamal Yafai will face Luca Rigoldi for the EBU European super bantamweight title. Other fights on the March 27 Matchroom Boxing Italy on DAZN card include: Fabio Turchi vs. TBA, Serhiy Demchenko vs. Hrvoje Sep, Samuel Nmomah vs. Christian Arvelo and Mirko Natalizi vs. TBA.
• The WBC has suspended Alejandra Jimenez’s recognition as the super middleweight world champion while it investigates an adverse finding in a VADA drug test from January 10. Jimenez has requested that her “B” sample be examined and the container will be opened on February 19.
• Former WBO welterweight champion Jeff Horn will face Tim Tszyu in a junior middleweight bout on April 22 in Australia. Horn has fought all three of his fights as a middleweight since dropping his WBO title to Terence Crawford in 2018, sporting a 2-1 record in those fights.
• The IBF has upheld the original result of the Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov vs. Azinga Fuzile super featherweight title eliminator in which Rakhimov won by eighth-round knockout last year. There was controversy surrounding the bout as Fuzile’s team argued there was illegal use of a smelling salt by Rakhimov’s corner in between rounds. As a result, the IBF has ordered super featherweight champion Joseph Diaz Jr. to fight Rakhimov by July 30, 2020 and Fuzile to fight in a title eliminator and the winner of both fights must fight by April 30, 2021.
• The WBO has ordered a purse bid for a light heavyweight title eliminator between Eleider Alvarez and Gilberto Ramirez, set to take place on February 20.
• After Sampson Lewkowicz won a purse bid for a unified WBA and IBF junior welterweight fight between Josh Taylor and Apinun Khongsong, Lewkowicz missed the IBF’s January 31 deadline to put up a second payment of $132,000, as per terms of the purse bid he won for $1.32 million to beat Top Rank. As such, Top Rank now has the promotional rights to the fight.
• After unsuccessfully challenging for the WBO Light Heavyweight title against Sergey Kovalev last August, Anthony Yarde returned to action in Spain on February 8, beating Diego Jair Ramirez by second-round TKO.
• Steve Gago will challenge for the WBC Australasia title against current WBC Asia Pacific Champion Gesiler AP on March 6 in Metro City, Perth, Australia.
