Eddie Alvarez Doesn’t Believe In Over Training, But Will Brooks Believes He’s Running
Eddie Alvarez made headlines when he said he didn’t believe in over-training. If Will Brooks is to be believed, Alvarez is going to need all the training he can get when they meet in the cage.
The former Bellator Champion Alvarez (28-4) spoke to UFC Hall of Famer Bas Rutten on Inside MMA recently and said that he sparred an enormous number of rounds to prepare for his title victory over Rafael dos Anjos at UFC Fight Night 90.
“We’ve done 150 sparring rounds, live sparring rounds for this fight. I couldn’t have perfected this dance any more than what it’s going to be. We’re just ready to go in there on Thursday and do it. I don’t believe in over-training. I think someone made that up who didn’t necessarily want to train that day so he came up with a line and said ‘over-train.’ I don’t believe it. I’m in the mind that the more you do something the better you get at it,” Alvarez said.
The Alvarez quote made headlines, with many questioning his line of thinking. Either way, Alvarez was successful, and already has a plethora of challengers waiting for him, including a familiar name.
Alvarez back on the radar of his old foe, Will Brooks. Brooks (19-1), another former Bellator Champion, has signed with the UFC and debuted Friday, defeating Ross Pearson. During their Bellator days, a fight was talked about, but never occurred before Alvarez finally left for the UFC.
“I wanted to fight that guy before he left Bellator,” Brooks told MMA Fighting in an interview. “And I’m not gonna talk too much about Bellator because that’s the past and I’m moving forward. But I still don’t feel validated because he was the champion and he left and I didn’t get the opportunity to beat the champion to become the champion. I had to turn around and beat up his leftovers. Michael Chandler, I had to beat him up twice just to feel somewhat validated. That felt good to me.”
