Derrick Lewis vs. Cyril Gane Set For Interim UFC Heavyweight Title Bout At UFC 265

A massive wrench has been thrown into the UFC heavyweight title picture.

According to ESPN’s Brett Okamoto via UFC President Dana White, former title challenger Derrick Lewis is set to face top contender Cyril Gane for the interim UFC heavyweight championship at UFC 265 on August 7.

The news comes as a surprise to many as current champion Francis Ngannou was reportedly set to defend his title against the aforementioned Lewis later this year before plans were abruptly nixed after White announced that Ngannou wouldn’t be available for a bout this summer due to unforeseen circumstances.

Gane is fresh off of a unanimous decision victory over fellow top contender Alexander Volkov this past weekend at UFC Vegas 30 in the night’s main event.

Lewis last competed at UFC Vegas 19, where he viciously knocked out Curtis Blaydes during the evening’s main event to leap himself into title contention.
