Daniel Cormier On His Injury, His Return And Training Regimen
Daniel Cormier said he hopes to come back from his most recent injury within a few months and that he cannot be worried about injuring himself during his training.
The UFC Light Heavyweight champion spoke to Ariel Helwani on the November 28 edition of the MMA Hour and said he tore his right adductor muscle. Cormier told Helwani that he's still contemplating having surgery. Cormier said he is hoping to be back in action by February or March.
"For me, I felt a little bit off," Cormier said. "I felt like I didn't do as much as I needed to do and it really messed with me mentally. Now, I spar a lot and I run a lot and I train a lot. It's the only way that I feel secure in my own mind. How can you train if you're constantly worried about getting injured? Guys play basketball and get hurt and that's probably the easiest sport on the planet. We're actually fighting every day. We're wrestling, we're grappling."
Cormier also spoke on his preparation for his UFC 200 match earlier this year against Anderson Silva, who came in as a last-minute replacement for Jon Jones.
"I was like worried," Cormier said. "Like, man did I run enough? Did I put enough miles in? Did I spar enough rounds? And you don't want to be questioning yourself. That was supposed to be Jon Jones."
Cormier was supposed to defend his title against Anthony Johnson at UFC 206 live from Toronto on December 10, but had to withdraw from his title defense due to the injury.
