Daniel Cormier Disappointed In How UFC Phoenix Main Event Ended

UFC Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier watched his teammate and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez suffer a quick knockout loss to Francis Ngannou in the main event of UFC Fight Night Phoenix.

DC, who watched a fallen Velasquez compete for the first time since UFC 200, was disappointed by what he saw on Sunday Night.

“Just very disappointed,” Cormier said on ESPN Sportscenter (via MMA Junkie). “I know how hard he trained. I know how well he prepared for this fight, and for it to end the way that it did was very unfortunate.”

Velasquez has now won just one of his last three UFC bouts and hasn’t picked up a victory in well over two years.

Cormier says that Velasquez looked good in the training camp leading up to the fight, but admits that Velasquez couldn’t control what happened on Sunday Night.

“I thought that he looked good (in training camp). He was ready to fight,” Cormier said. “… He looked good. I thought he was ready fight. And I felt like he was ready to win this fight. You just cannot control some of the things that happen. He hurt his knee. And also you’re fighting a big, powerful guy like Francis. There’s no room for error.”

Ngannou has now won two straight fights and could find himself battling Cormier for the UFC Heavyweight Title in the future.
