Daniel Cormier had a “WrestleMania moment” in July.
Following his UFC 226 victory over Stipe Miocic where he won the UFC Heavyweight Title, Cormier immediately turned his attention to Brock Lesnar, who just so happened to be sitting in the front row. Lesnar entered the cage and immediately shoved Cormier, leading to some words between the two.
Appearing on Busted Open Radio, Cormier discussed the UFC 226 post-fight confrontation with Lesnar.
“I was aware he was there. After the fight I go, ‘Brock Lesnar, get your ass in here.’ He comes in. If I knew he was coming hard charging, I would have dug my heels,” explained Cormier. “I didn’t like the visual of him pushing me and me flying back like that. It’s not the best visual for a guy like me, I didn’t want it to seem like he could just toss me around. Right after that we start jawing back-and-forth. Brock did a promo on me and goes, ‘He’s a piece of shit, he’s a piece of shit, I’m coming for you.’ I don’t know why they haven’t had Brock talking for years. Because he can do it. He’s good at it.”
As far as what was going through his head in the moment, Cormier said, “I gotta be honest, I was in there and I was like, ‘Holy shit, I’m having a WrestleMania Moment. I’m having a WrestleMania Moment right now with Brock Lesnar.’ It was the craziest thing because I was mad, but I was like, ‘Wow, this is amazing.'”
Cormier returns to the octagon this Saturday when he defends the UFC Heavyweight Title against Derrick Lewis. A win for Cormier could setup a showdown with Lesnar in early 2019. If Brock decides to confront Cormier once again on Saturday, this time, the double champ will be more prepared.
“Brock Lesnar is ‘allegedly’ supposed to be in the building on Saturday. Brock Lesnar comes into that octagon on Saturday, I’m slapping him. I’m not playing anymore this time. No pushing and jawing. He better not come into my octagon. I’ll definitely do it. I’m gonna smack him right in his face. I owe him one.”
Lesnar will be in Saudi Arabia for WWE Crown Jewel on Friday. The event is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. ET and end roughly four hours later. A non-stop flight from Saudi Arabia to New York is approximately 12 hours. Logistically, it is possible for Lesnar to be in New York by the time the UFC 230 main card begins at 10 p.m. ET on Saturday night.
Fightful will provide live coverage of WWE Crown Jewel on Friday afternoon and UFC 230 on Saturday night.
