Dana White Says The UFC Flyweight Division Never Took Off
Ever since former UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson was traded to One Championship, it has been rumored that the men’s flyweight division would be shutdown by the UFC.
Dana White claims one big reason that division may go by the wayside is that it never really caught on with the fans.
“T.J. Dillashaw didn’t do shit to the flyweight division,” White said on UFC Unfiltered. “The flyweight division just never took off, it never caught on. Even with a dominant champion like Demetrious, it just never caught on. People didn’t care. I battled for a long time, I tried to keep it alive and obviously, it’s still going on now. We still have fights going on in that division, but we’ll see what the future holds for it.”
There is no official word at this time as to whether or not the division will actually be eliminated, but the aforementioned title bout at UFC 233 is the final bout booked for the weight class at the moment. If the division does close down, it would leave the UFC with a total of eleven weight classes.
