Dana White Says The Conor McGregor Must Relinquish A Title If He Wins At UFC 205
Conor McGregor is looking to be a double champion in the UFC, a goal that the fighter can accomplish if he defeats UFC Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205.
However, according to an interview that UFC President Dana White gave on ESPN Sportscenter, McGregor will have to give up either the featherweight title or the lightweight title if he is successful at UFC 205.
“So this fight’s coming up, and he wants to try to gain both belts,” White said. “He will give up one of the titles after that fight in New York.”
White also addressed the rumors going around that McGregor suffered a serious foot injury after his rematch with Nate Diaz at UFC 202.
“After the Nate Diaz fight he injured his foot. The doctor basically said there’s no real damage there, it’s an old injury, but you need to stay off your foot for a few weeks,” White said. “Conor and I were going back and forth about the foot. I told him, ‘You’re not a doctor,’ and he told me, ‘I know my body better than you do.’ I’ll give him that one and he wants to fight. It’s the reason we all love Conor McGregor.”
White also took the time to address speculation that he was using Khabib Nurmagomedov to leverage McGregor into taking the fight with Alvarez.
“It’s actually not that bad. He’s an intelligent guy,” White said. “The thing that I love and respect about Conor McGregor is that he wants to fight and he wants to fight everybody. He’s my kind of guy.”
UFC 205 takes place November 12 from Madison Square Garden in New York City.
