CSAC Recommends Brett Johns & Alex Perez Move Up A Weight Class
Brett Johns and Alex Perez were both in action recently at UFC 227, which was held under the jurisdiction of the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC).
The CSAC has now recommended that both Perez and Johns move up a weight class according to MMA Fighting, with Perez going from flyweight to bantamweight and for Johns going from bantamweight to featherweight. The reason behind the move is due to the CSAC’s 10 point weight cutting plan, which states that the commission would recommend that fighters move up a weight class if their fight night weights were ten percent over their weigh-in weights.
Sixteen of the fighters who competed at UFC 227 weighed in ten percent higher on fight night than the weigh-ins the day before, but they were all close enough to the ten percent that they will not get a recommendation to move up a weight class.
MMA Fighting spoke to Perez’s manager in Jason House, who said that the fighter is not planning on following the recommendation of the CSAC.
Johns would say the following to MMA Fighting about the CSAC recommendation, stating that he will remain at bantamweight for the time being:
“Yes, we have been recommended to move up a weight division [by CSAC]. I have spoken with my coaches, and potentially in a few years featherweight would be a division that I see myself competing at. For now, bantamweight is my division. I completely understand why CSAC would like us to move up a division but I’ve been cutting weight like this since my UFC debut, not once have I been hospitalized or have I had issues making the weight since signing with the UFC. Granted, I’ve had issues before, but they are in the past now. I feel fantastic at bantamweight.”
There are no more UFC events scheduled in the state of California for this year, while the promotion has yet to announce any events for 2019.
