Countdown To UF 205: 21 Fun Facts, Interesting Notes & Other Things To Know

We're a grand total of five days away from UFC 205, and the second part of our countdown to UFC 205 will see 21 fun facts, interesting notes and other things to know heading into this monumental event

  1. The only other UFC event to take place in New York was UFC 7 in 1995. Of the sixteen fighters that competed on the UFC 7 card, only one is in the UFC Hall Of Fame — Ken Shamrock.
  2. There are a total of three title fights on the card, which is the most on a single UFC event.
  3.  There are a grand total of 4 champions, 16 ranked fighters and 6 unranked fighters on the card.
  4.  This is also the first UFC pay-per-view where every fighter on the pay-per-view portion of the card has either a champion or ranked in the top 15.
  5. Liz Carmouche will be competing in the very first UFC bout in Madison Square Garden (against Katlyn Chookagian). She also competed in the very first women’s bout in UFC history (against Ronda Rousey at UFC 157).
  6. Outside of the champions themselves, the highest ranked fighter competing on the card is Miesha Tate, who is number one in the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Division.
  7. The lowest ranked fighters competing on the card are Rafael Natal (#14 at middleweight) and Katlyn Chookagian (#14 at women’s bantamweight) — not including unranked talents.
  8. A total of four former UFC champions are competing on the card. Former middleweight champion Chris Weidman, former women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate, former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans.
  9. The pay-per-view card is slotted for 4 hours, which will make in the longest amount of time given to any UFC pay-per-view.
  10. Family members are competing on this card as Stephen Thompson (who is fighting Tyron Woodley) and Chris Weidman (who is fighting Yoel Romero) are brothers in law (Thompson is married to Weidman’s sister).
  11. UFC 200 was the last milestone event celebrated by the UFC before the New York return, Frankie Edgar, Miesha Tate, Kelvin Gastelum and Jim Miller competed on that card, as well as UFC 205.
  12. If Conor McGregor can beat Eddie Alvarez, he will become the first fighter in UFC history to hold two championships simultaneously.
  13. The biggest gap in rankings between the ranked fighters who will are competing against one other is 7, as Miesha Tate is ranked #1 and Raquel Pennington is ranked #8.
  14. There are a grand total of four undefeated fighters on the card. UFC Women’s Strawweight Champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk (12-0-0), Karolina Kowalkiewiecz (10-0-0), Khabib Nurmagomedov (23-0-0) and Katlyn Chookagian (8-0-0).
  15. The longest gap between fights for any competitor on the card is a little over 25 months, which belongs to Tim Kennedy. He last competed at UFC 178 in September 2014.
  16. Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Rashad Evans will be making his middleweight division debut at this event, facing Kennedy.
  17. There are four weight divisions that have no representation at UFC 205 — flyweight, heavyweight, light heavyweight or (men’s) bantamweight division fights on the card.
  18. Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Karolina Kowalkiewiecz have fought before as amateurs. Jedrzejczyk won that fight by first round submission in March 2012.
  19. Miesha Tate was Raquel Pennington’s coach on the UFC Ultimate Fighter 18. Pennington made it to the semi-finals, but was defeated by Jessica Rakoczy by unanimous decision.
  20. There are a grand total of three former Bellator MMA or Strikeforce champions on the card — Eddie Alvarez was the Bellator MMA Lightweight Champion, Tyron Woodley is a former Strikeforce Welterweight Champion and Miesha Tate is a former Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion.
  21. There are only two fights on the card where both competitors are unranked — Jim Miller versus Thiago Alves and Belal Muhammad versus Vincente Luque.
