Floyd Mayweather has stepped up to the ring against the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Oscar De La Hoya, Miguel Cotto, Canelo Alvarez and has beaten them all. Don't expect Mayweather to take Conor McGregor lightly.
Hours after Mayweather vs. McGregor was announced, UFC president Dana White, Showtime Sports' Stephen Espinoza and Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe were in the first conference call and Ellerbe said Floyd has his sights fully set on McGregor and is taking this fight very seriously.
"Floyd's thinking about nothing else other than Conor," Ellerbe said. "This fight has a different type of feel…[This is] more of a mainstream, global event."
As for McGregor and his confidence heading into this fight, White isn't worried at all that McGregor will crumble under the pressure.
"The McGregor clan has been taking over villages for the past 300 years. Floyd's village is next," White said. "This kid eats pressure like no one I've ever seen. We're stepping into Floyd's world… I stopped doubting this kid a long time ago."
The mega fight will take place on August 26 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with the bout being an all-boxing card broadcasted on pay-per-view by Showtime. Ellerbe said there will not be any crossover fights between boxers and mixed martial artists. Mayweather vs. McGregor will be a light middleweight boxing fight (154-pound limit).
This will be Mayweather's first boxing fight since beating Andre Berto in 2015 while this marks McGregor's professional boxing debut.
