Conor McGregor’s Coach Promises “MMA Mentality” In Dustin Poirier Trilogy Fight

Conor McGregor’s long-time head coach, John Kavanagh, promises a different approach for McGregor’s trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier.

Kavanagh had a lot to say about the rematch in a recent interview with BT Sports.

“He is in great spirits, well he actually sold the spirits so he is in really good financial spirits.” Kavanagh opened with, referencing McGregor’s buy out of his well known Whiskey. “I’m hoping we can get that rematch in the summer…we want to get that one back and we gotta figure out these freaking calf kicks.”

After McGregor’s lone TKO loss in the UFC, much was made of the calf kicks Poirier utilizied through both rounds. Kavanagh and his team believe that with a solution to the calf kicks, McGregor can win the rubber match.

“I also describe a game of spinning plates. Your spinning the boxing plate then you realize the wrestling plate is about to stop so then you gotta go and spin that one. then you gotta spin the jui-jitsu one, the kickboxing one. We got a little bit obsessed with the boxing plate. There was talk of a big boxing fight after that…our bad, our mistake, our fault, no one to blame… we gotta get ready for a rematch.”

Kavanagh referenced the rumored Manny Pacquiao fight that loomed over Conor had he won his main event fight at UFC 257.

Kavanagh believes that with a small adjustment to broaden Conor’s focus past his beloved boxing, a rematch will look much different.

“We have to fix that technical detail, which it’s not like having to fix everything, it’s fixing a small enough area. Get that back into the whole game, not going in with a sort of with a boxing mentality, going in with an MMA mentality.”
