Championship Rematch Set For UFC 209

The UFC Welterweight Title will be defended this March at UFC 209 as champion Tyron Woodley will be defending the gold once again against #1 Stephen Thompson.

Woodley (18-3-1) will be making the second defense of his championship, he retained it in his first defense via a majority draw against Stephen Thompson at UFC 205. Woodley had previously challenged for the Strikeforce Middleweight Title, losing to Nate Marquardt at a July 2012 Strikeforce event. Woodley had won three straight fights before the draw against Thompson at UFC 205, those three wins came over the trio of Dong Hyun Kim, Kelvin Gastelum and Robbie Lawler.

Thompson (13-1-1) hasn’t competed since the majority draw against Woodley at UFC 205, he had won seven straight fights prior to that majority draw. During that seven fight winning streak, Thompson picked up key wins over Robert Whittaker, Patrick Cote, Jake Ellenberger, Johny Hendricks and Rory MacDonald. Thompson hasn’t suffered a defeat in well over four years, that defeat came to Matt Brown by decision at UFC 145 in April of 2012.

UFC 209 takes place on Saturday, March 4 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada with Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson headlining, the main card will be airing on pay-per-view.
