Chael Sonnen Claims Conor McGregor Is Marking Out For His Own Gimmick
Chael Sonnen is in the midst of preparations for competing in the Bellator MMA Heavyweight Title tournament, which is set to take place next year.
However, the Bellator MMA star has kept a close eye on UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor and he believes that McGregor is starting to mark out for his own gimmick.
“He’s starting to mark out for his own gimmick,” Sonnen said on Beyond The Fight. “As human beings, we are whoever we pretend to be. When you get these guys to adopt a character, over a small period of time, they become that person. We’ve seen this from the highest of levels. This is a real thing. Actors do it all the time. The great actors become the characters they’re playing at that time, whether it’s a cowboy, it’s a bad guy — I’m watching Conor mark out for his own gimmick.”
The most recent bit on controversy surrounding the UFC Lightweight Champion occurred when he hopped the cage at Bellator 187.
Sonnen even heard rumors that McGregor was on drugs at the event, but he doesn’t believe that to be true.
“People were coming out saying ‘oh he’s on coke, that’s the only reason he would act that way. He was drunk and was on coke.’ I don’t think that’s right — he probably was drunk, that part was probably true,” says Sonnen.
McGregor has issued an apology for his actions, but the fighter has yet to receive any kind of formal punishment for said actions and it is unknown at this time if he will.
