Cerrone, Lewis, Vick Pick Up Top 15 Wins At UFC Austin; Cerrone Makes History
Donald Cerrone, James Vick and Derrick Lewis all took home huge wins at UFC Austin, and Cerrone made history in the process.
A former UFC title challenger, #11 Cerrone defeated friend and fellow top-15 fighter in Yancy Medeiros. The two slugged it out from the opening bell, and even embraced after Medeiros slipped. Ultimately Cerrone connected and dropped his friend, knocking Medeiros out. After the fight, Medeiros embraced Cerrone's grandmother, who was ringside. The bout ended a three fight losing streak for Cerrone, and ended Medeiros' three-fight winning streak.
The fight was a monumental one for Cerrone. With the win, he became only the third man to reach 20 UFC wins, joining former champions Michael Bisping and Georges St-Pierre in doing so. Cerrone's next win will break the all-time UFC wins record, assuming he fights before either other man.
#7 Derrick Lewis went Super Saiyan in the third round, knocking out #9 Marcin Tybura after a back-and-forth affair. After almost retiring last year following a loss to Mark Hunt, Lewis called out Francis Ngannou, Curtis Blaydes, Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum on Fox as potential opponents. Lewis is second in UFC Heavyweight history with nine knockouts after less than four years in the company.
#12 James Vick passed one of the biggest tests of his career in beating #14 Francisco Trinaldo. Both men had won 7 of their last 8 UFC fights, and Vick actually dislocated his pinky finger on his way to a unanimous decision win. After dropping a fight to Beneil Dariush, Vick looks to make his impression in the top 15 of the division moving forward.
