Kendall Grove vs. AJ Matthews

Round 1: These two are really good friends, so this should be a fun one to watch play out. Grove lands a nice combination that causes Matthews to slip briefly. Matthews goes to the body after the two trade kicks. Matthews is going to the inside of the calf of Grove's lead leg often, and mixes in a nice couple of hooks to the body. The round finishes with Grove landing a knee to the body.

Round 2: Matthews and Grove meet in the center of the cage in time for Matthews to push Grove back against the cage. Grove repeatedly circles to the power of Matthews, and Matthews is avoiding every strike Grove throws. You can tell Matthews is familiar with Grove's striking patterns. In the last ten seconds they slug it out but not much lands, and Matthews still has the momentum.

Round 3: Matthews opens up on Grove after the first minute of the round and connects several time. This motivates Grove to use his reach a little more, allowing him to find success with about a half dozen jabs. Matthews keeps catching Grove with strikes, elbows and punches, but slips on a head kick attempt. Grove can't capitalize. Matthews does not loot like a guy who has lost four fights in a row, this fight has been all him outside of the occasional Grove combo.

Official Result: AJ Matthews defeated Kendall Grove via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27)

#10 Saad Awad vs. JJ Ambrose

Round 1: Awad lands five leg kicks to the outside lead of Ambrose in the first minute alone. Ambrose is throwing the front kick out there, but can't find a home for it. Ambrose's leg is already swelling up. He can't keep taking those leg kicks. Awad and Ambrose trade hooks, with both landing. Awad gets a right hand, but Ambrose comes back with a left. Ambrose takes Awad down with an uchi mata, but can't keep him down.

Fightful scores the round 10-9 for Awad

Round 2: Awad and Ambrose are talking trash, which leads to an Awad side kick to the face, leg kick, and head kick. Over and over. Awad takes Ambrose's back and drags him to the ground. Awad gains the body triangle before switching to mount and scoring a couple of punches. Ambrose works his way back to his feet, but is pulled back down to the ground again. Knees to the body of Ambrose connect with regularity, but he's able to snap Awad down to the ground to close the round.

Fightful scores the round 10-9 for Awad

Round 3: Ambrose picks up where he left off in round 2. After Awad makes his way back up to his feet, Ambrose works Awad back down into a turtle position and lands some light strikes. Ambrose makes a positional error and gets thrown to the ground and has his back taken. Awad gains top control to close the round.

Fightful scores the round a 10-10 draw, making it 30-28 Awad

Official Result: Saad Awad defeated JJ Ambrose via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Fernando Gonzalez vs. Lorenz Larkin

Round 1: Larkin much lighter on his feet as a whole lot of nothing happens for the first two minutes. A straight an  leg kick. Gonzalez tries to shoot from the outside, but Larkin sees it coming from a mile away. Gonzalez backs Larkin up against the cage and unloads a combo. The two are trading in the middle of the cage, Gonzalez really pressing and throwing with intent. Gonzalez may have stolen the round in the last minute.

Fightful scores the round 10-9 for Gonzalez

Round 2: Lorenz Larkin connects with a body kick to open the round. Gonzalez throws a lazy lead out there and Larkin makes him pay with a nice combo. Gonzalez is wading in, landing about half of his punches, but every time, Larkin counters. Gonzalez works Larkin against the cage for a couple of strikes, and the two throw down hard.

Round 3: Larkin throws and lands a switch kick at the start of the round. Gonzalez is switching up punches and body kicks, and doing it well. Larkin and Gonzalez both still look fresh, and are throwing with power. Larkin scores with two punches, then keeps Gonzalez at the end of his jab and hits them at will before changing to a leg kick. They're both in the pocket throwing in high volume. As time ticks away, Larkin opens up and puts the pain on Gonzalez with punches and elbows to end the round.
