Anderson Silva Ends Retirement Talk, Eyes Cannonier Rematch
After creating some uncertainty with a social media post, Anderson Silva clears up his fighting future while suggesting a Jared Cannonier rematch.
After leaving fans unsure with a lengthy social media post, Anderson Silva has cleared his fighting future up, saying no to retirement after all.
“I’m not stopping, I’m not retiring,” Silva told TMZ. “I just take my time now because I have my movie in China, I’m going to China to promote my movie and come down a little bit. Take care of my knee, start physical therapy and we’ll see but I come back soon.”
As for Silva’s knee, ‘The Spider’ all but confirmed the post-fight reports, “it’s not good but it’s not too bad.” At UFC 237, that injury brought an end to Silva’s night, collapsing in response to a Jared Cannonier low-kick. However, the initial concerns were soon muted as it was revealed that he’d avoided any serious injury. As a result, Silva is left optimistic about his return.
As for Cannonier, Silva is already eyeing a rematch with the American contender. “I talked to Dana about that but Dana just talked to me and said ‘go back home, rest, be careful and let’s see.’ But that has a big chance to happen.” If Silva can indeed avenge this past weekend’s loss, it’ll be just the 2nd win on his record since losing the Middleweight Title in July 2012.
Nonetheless, Silva seems undeterred, “my focus is now to recover, stay healthy and strong and come back.” As is always the case with aging greats, debate will continue to surround ‘The Spider’s decision but for now, he indeed looks set to fight on regardless.
