Alistair Overeem Still Wants A Fight With Alexander Volkov

Alistair Overeem competed in the main event of UFC Fight Night St. Petersburg, defeating Aleksei Oleinik by first round TKO.

A victorious Overeem was supposed to fight Alexander Volkov in the main event of the show and Overeem is still open to that bout down the road.

“I’m still looking for that fight,” Overeem said at the post-fight press conference (via Steven Marrocco of MMA Junkie). “I was very prepared to face Alexander Volkov. I was looking forward to that fight. That fight didn’t happen tonight, but hopefully the next fight will be Volkov.”

Volkov was removed from the card due to health issues, it is unknown at this time as to how long the fighter is expected to be out of action for.

Overeem is also willing to face other competition in the Octagon, but would rather face Volkov first.

“The UFC will match you with whoever is interesting, and that’s based on rankings,” he said. “To me, Volkov is still ranked. I’m still looking for that. Let’s do that first, and then we figure out who comes after.”

The injured Volkov was ranked one spot ahead of Overeem heading into UFC Fight Night St. Petersburg, but those rankings can change when the UFC updates them later this week.
