Alistair Overeem Controversially Beats Fabricio Werdum In UFC 213 Trilogy Fight (Fight Video Highlights)

The Alistair Overeem-Fabricio Werdum trilogy has a winner…maybe.

The fans in attendance at Saturday Night's UFC 213 didn't seem to think so. They rained down boos on the former Strikeforce Heavwyeight Champion when it was announced he'd taken home a majority decision victory over Werdum after a fight that was sometimes frustrating to watch.

Fightful.com lead MMA writer David Tees had the bout scored 29-28 for Werdum.

Round Three: The round begins with Overeem taking some wild swings at Werdum, Werdum catches a swinging Overeem with a counter right. Werdum charges forward and he swings wildly at Overeem, Werdum then pops Overeem with a knee strike. Werdum drops Overeem with a knee strike to the head, Werdum drops for a guillotine choke and Overeem escapes to get the fight standing. Werdum comes forward and he rocks Overeem with a plethora of strikes, Werdum scores a takedown on Overeem and he gets the open guard. Werdum starts attacking Overeem with some ground and pound, Werdum transitions to the half guard on Overeem as the round ends.

Official Result: #3 Alistair Overeem def. #1 Fabricio Werdum by majority decision (28-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Overeem stated after the fight that he hopes to get another shot at the UFC Heavyweight title. 

The rivalry started over a decade ago in 2006, when Werdum submitted Overeem with a kimura at Pride Total Elimination Absolute. Overeem would win a rematch in 2011 in a Strikeforce Heavyweight GP quarterfinal, in the midst of the most dominant run of his career.
