Alex Morono talks UFC Calgary, Jordan Mein & Wants Ottow/Northcutt Winner Next

Alex Morono looks to pick up professional MMA win number fifteen at UFC On Fox 30 when he takes on Jordan Mein

The welterweight picked up what was arguably the biggest win of his career over Josh Burkman at UFC Fight Night Austin and Morono says the gameplan that night worked on the very first attempt.

“No, we had planned a few things around his movement and how he enters into combos. We had planned on kind of baiting him to come forward and then colliding in when he committed, it worked the first try and that was awesome. That was a really good performance,” says Morono in an exclusive interview with Fightful’s James Lynch.

Morono bounced back from a terrible 2017 with that win, the the fighter lost to Keita Nakamura and fought Niko Price to a no contest the year before.

While Morono doesn’t plan on looking past Mein at UFC On Fox 30, a win puts the fighter in a position to call out a future foe.

“I think it puts me in a position to really ask for my next fight, one thing is Zak Ottow’s fighting Sage Northcutt soon (Northcutt won by second round TKO at UFC Fight Night Boise). It was funny, he (Ottow) had messaged me on Twitter asking for a fight…but I don’t ever check that. Weeks had gone by and I finally went back and looked it over and I saw he wanted to fight and I was like ‘damn, I really love that fight.’ I had hit up my manager, but Zak was already matched up and I was offered the Mein fight like the next day. That’s a fight that I would really like to take afterwards, but man…there’s a million fights in the division that I would take. I really couldn’t think of anyone I wouldn’t fight, we’ll see what Sean Shelby says next, but if its up to me and I come out of this fight not too banged up…I wouldn’t mind getting another fight in soon,” says Morono.

UFC On Fox 30 takes place on Saturday, July 28 from the Scotiabank Center in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with Eddie Alvarez and Dustin Poirier headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, which airs live on Fox.
